چکیده

We present a simple analytic model for the various contributions to the non-thermal emission from shell type SNRs, and show that this model’s results reproduce well the results of previous detailed calculations. We show that the ≥ 1 TeV gamma ray emission from the shell type SNRs RX J1713.7-3946 and RX J0852.04622 is dominated by inverse-Compton scattering of CMB photons (and possibly infra-red ambient photons) by accelerated electrons. Pion decay (due to proton-proton collisions) is shown to account for only a small fraction, . 10−2, of the observed flux, as assuming a larger fractional contribution would imply nonthermal radio and X-ray synchrotron emission and thermal X-ray Bremsstrahlung emission that far exceed the observed radio and X-ray fluxes. Models where pion decay dominates the ≥ 1 TeV flux avoid the implied excessive synchrotron emission (but not the implied excessive thermal X-ray Bremsstrahlung emission) by assuming an extremely low efficiency of electron acceleration, Kep . 10−4 (Kep is the ratio of the number of accelerated electrons and the number of accelerated protons at a given energy). We argue that observations of SNRs in nearby galaxies imply a lower limit of Kep & 10−3, and thus rule out Kep values . 10−4. It is suggested that SNRs with strong thermal X-ray emission, rather than strong non-thermal X-ray emission, are more suitable candidates for searches of gamma rays and neutrinos resulting from proton-proton collisions. In particular, it is shown that the neutrino flux from the SNRs above is probably too low to be detected by current and planned neutrino observatories. Finally, we note that the magnetic field value implied by the comparison of X-ray to gamma-ray emission, ∼ 10 μG, can be used to constrain magnetic field amplification. Radio to Gamma-ray Emission from Shell-type Supernova Remnants: Predictions from Non-linear Shock Acceleration Models

Supernova remnants (SNRs) are widely believed to be the principal source of galactic cosmic rays, produced by diffusive shock acceleration in the environs of the remnant’s expanding blast wave. Such energetic particles can produce gamma-rays and lower energy photons via interactions with the ambient plasma. The recently reported observation of TeV gamma-rays from SN1006 by the CANGAROO Collabor...

Detailed analysis of observed antiprotons in cosmic rays

In the present work, the origin of antiprotons observed in cosmic rays (above the atmosphere) is analyzed in details. We have considered the origin of the primaries, (which their interactions with the interstellar medium is one of the most important sources of antiprotons) is a supernova type II then used a diffusion model for their propagation. We have used the latest parameterization for anti...

The Cannonball Model of Gamma Ray Bursts: high-energy neutrinos and γ-rays

Recent observations suggest that γ-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows are produced by jets of highly relativistic cannonballs (CBs), emitted in supernova (SN) explosions. The CBs, reheated by their collision with the shell, emit radiation that is collimated along their direction of motion and Dopplerboosted to the typical few-hundred keV energy of the GRB. Accompanying the GRB, there should...

VHE Gamma-ray supernova remnants

Increasing observational evidence gathered especially in X-rays and γ-rays during the course of the last few years support the notion that Supernova remnants (SNRs) are Galactic particle accelerators up to energies close to the “knee” in the energy spectrum of Cosmic rays. This review summarises the current status of γ-ray observations of SNRs. Shell-type as well as plerionic type SNRs are addr...

Future GLAST observations of Supernova remnants and Pulsar Wind Nebulae

Shell-type Supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been known to harbour a population of ultra-relativistic particles, accelerated in the Supernova shock wave by the mechanism of diffusive shock acceleration. Experimental evidence for the existence of electrons up to energies of 100 TeV was first provided by the detection of hard X-ray synchrotron emission as e.g. in the shell of the young SNR SN10...
